Gary Smith

Born in San Francisco, Gary Smith received his formal art training at California College of the Arts in Oakland. While at CCA’s satellite campus in Mexico, he became fascinated by the architecture there, the massive arches and the thick, sculpturesque adobe walls and breathtaking lake views and decided then to concentrate on the elements of landscapes. He received his B.F.A in Drawing and Printmaking from CCA in 1971. A year of study in Paris at Atelier 17 with S.W. Hayter introduced him to etching and engraving. Later, in San Francisco, he studied mezzotint with the master Hamaguchi.

Gary Smith has lived and worked in Inverness since the 1970’s, deriving inspiration from the landscapes of Point Reyes and Tomales Bay. His work includes mixed media drawings, silverpoints, pastels, original etchings, lithographs, and monotypes. His work often captures the mystical yet meditative quality of the land.
